Effective Language Learning
with Clear Dutch
The teaching system of Clear Dutch is based on a balanced combination of daily memorization, input (reading and listening) and output (writing and speaking, including pronunciation and grammar). For memorization we use Quizlet (with spaced repetition), mnemonics (memory techniques), context and you will be working with personalized learning items. These are, for example, words, structures or expressions that you are likely to need or use soon. The use of study books is optional, but never the only part of your personal study program, because using the language in real life situations requires real life practice. This also makes learning more fun, because you can choose learning activities about topics of your own interests. And since motivation is one of the most important ingredients for successful language learning, it should be at least a little bit enjoyable.
Realistic time investment
Clear Dutch also stands for being honest about what it takes to learn a language, so we won't promise you to reach a certain level in a few months, or that you will learn by simply assisting classes and doing homework once a week. No, learning a foreign language takes a lot of time and focused effort, during an extensive period of time. We don't want you to have unrealistic ideas or goals and get frustrated and demotivated by not achieving them. Therefore, we recommend all students to make a minimum of 2,5 hours per week available for self-study, preferrably, divided over at least 3 days. You have to make learning Dutch a priority and try to integrate the language into your daily life. Self-study time is very important and going to class will not be of much use without it.
Lessons
In class, on the other hand, you will not be spending any time on doing exercises that you could have also done yourself at home. We believe this is a waste of time and money. Lessons at Clear Dutch have the following purposes:
- Motivation
- Finding an effective way of studying that suits you (with lots of study tips)
- Answering your questions
- Feedback on 'open' writing assignments
- And most of all: Speaking Dutch with immediate feedback, including (grammar) explanations if needed
- (Exam training)
